The difference between stockings, hold-ups and tights

For a longtime if you were over a size 16, it was next to impossible to find any hosiery. Today we’re spoilt for choice. But with so many options available it can be difficult to know the difference or what is best for you.
What hasn’t changed is the differences in sizes. Different manufacturers size differently. So when buying hose always check the sizing before purchasing. And a final word on sizing, some brands use multiple sizing. Some products fit sizes 20-26. This is very different to the standard sizing of 20-22, 22-24, 24-26 that we’re used to. If you fall anywhere between a size 20-26 the item will fit you. Hosiery that fits ‘multiple sizes’ has additional fabric and stretch so they will never be too big or too small.
If it’s been a while since you wore hosiery think about trying it again. After-all nothing will bring your sexy back faster than showing a little leg and we have some gorgeous hosiery that suits every body for every occasion.

What’s the difference between tights and pantyhose? We use the terms pantyhose and tights interchangeably. Searching for tights will bring up all results whereas searching the term pantyhose will only bring up items named pantyhose by the manufacturer.

What’s the difference between tights and stockings?Stockings end mid thigh and are held up using either suspenders or are ‘hold-up’ stockings held in place using a combination of elastic and silicone. Tights have a gusset and sit anywhere from your hips to under your breasts (depending on the style and how you like to wear them.)

What’s the difference between stockings and hold-ups?Stockings can be held in place using a suspender belt whereas hold-ups grip your leg using a combination of elastic and silicon stitching and don’t need the addition of a suspender belt to keep them in place. Hold-ups are sometimes called Hold-up stockings.

Now that you’re clear on the basics when do you wear each style?

That’s completely up to you. Some people wear hold-ups on special occasions others wear them once or twice a week it all depends on your own style.

How should I care for my hoisery?

We recommend that you hand wash all hosiery. Use cold water and when washing hold-ups use only a small amount of soap. Soap can degrade the silicone that keeps hold-ups in place. Don’t fear, if your hold-ups loose grip then you can try using a little hairspray as an adhesive for the silicone. Also don’t stretch your hold-ups; often we pull them higher then they should go. This can distort the silicone and elastic. Also don’t use moisturizer it interferes with the silicone and the silicone has nothing to grip to. If you’re looking to extend the life of your favourite hold-ups then you can also use Hollywood tape or (hypoallergenic) adhesive gel to hold them in place.
Easy isn’t it! Now that you’re clear on the differences we have one of the largest ranges of tights, stockings and hold-ups for plus sizes in Australia. You’re sure to find something that’s perfect for you.
