How to Dress – A Body Shape Guide

The confidence boost that a well-fitted, figure complementing outfit can give you is not negligible. If you cannot find clothes that make you feel great, it’ll be hard to own your aesthetic. Whether you’re having a party at your home or looking for comfortable, professional attire, choosing clothes that flatter your body shape is a crucial step. To do that, first, you have to discover what your body type is. Once you understand your body type, it’ll be surprisingly easy to build a wardrobe that suits your style. Here’s a quick body shape guide to help you through the journey and find the best clothes.

What should you measure?

You need four body measurements to know your body shape: shoulders, bust, waist, and hips. The difference between the measurements will help you determine your body type. So, strip down, grab that measuring tape and let’s begin.

First, stand in front of the mirror. Put your legs together and your arms a bit away from your sides. If you can, get an extra pair of hands to help you out and measure the following.

Shoulders: Wrap the tape around the broadest points of your shoulders and note down the measurement.

Bust: Measure your bust by placing the tape snug against the fullest part of your breast. Don’t pull it so tight that it leaves dents on your skin.

Waist: Measure the narrowest part of your waist, just above the belly button.

Hips: Look for the fullest part of your hip. It will usually be just beneath the hipbones.

What’s your body type?

While we believe every woman is unique, most women fall into either of these body types or their variations – apple, pear, hourglass, inverted triangle or rectangle. Knowing which shape you align with will help you learn how to dress in the most flattering way. Now that you have your measurements let’s go through these five shapes and learn which one fits you.

1. Apple-shaped body type

The shoulder, bust and waist measurements will be the largest for apple-shaped bodies while hips are comparatively narrow. It is also called a circle or round body type. If you can describe yourself as “curvy with a less-defined waist”, you’re most likely to belong to this category. Skinny jeans and a loose top or ultra-high-waisted articles will look extra-good on you.

2. Pear-shaped body type

The main feature of pear-shaped bodies is the wide hips. If you have broad hips with a narrow waist and smaller shoulders, you’re most likely to have a pear-shaped body. It is also called a spoon-shaped or triangle-shaped body type. Fitted and structured tops are the best for your body type. Short jackets that don’t add extra layers around your hips, flared skirts rather than figure-hugging skirts look super good on you.

3. Hourglass body type

As the name suggests, if your topmost and lowest measurements are nearly equal, i.e., if your shoulders and hips are in balance, you’re said to have an hourglass figure. A big bust and narrow, defined waists are also at times attributed to this body type. Outfits that accentuate your curves, like figure-hugging dresses, will make you look stunning.

4. Inverted triangle body type

For bodies with the inverted triangle body type, shoulders are broader than the hips. Since women with this body type often have narrow hips and a wide bust, an inverted triangle is often considered a variation of the hourglass figure. Outfits with V-necks and belted styles will suit you well. Slightly flared rather than skinny pants/jeans look better on you.

5. Rectangle body shape

Do you have a straight build with relatively uniform measurements? If you do, then you’re likely to have a rectangle body shape. The shoulder and hip measurements are almost equal, and the waist isn’t much defined for this body type. Most outfits will look amazing on you.

Plussize shape

Remember that body shape is mostly dependent on your bone structure. For this reason, if you are plus size, you may still fall into any of the above shapes. The above dressing styles can help you choose the ideal attire.

We hope you’ll be able to figure out what your body type is with this body shape guide. You can research and experiment to find out what suits you best. Ultimately comfort is what matters the most. So, hey, go flaunt your curves!
